A generation ago, Christianity was the cultural default in the United States. That status has splintered over the last three decades, with the rise of the Nones.
Nones are those people who, when asked about their religious affiliation, declare themselves to be “None Of The Above”, meaning that they do not belong to a traditionally recognized religious group. A decade ago, Nones made up one fifth of the U.S. population. This year, the General Social Survey found that Nones have expanded to one of every four Americans.
Nones are on the rise in every state in the USA. There are now as many Americans who don’t belong to any religious group as there are evangelicals or Catholics.
Nones have been defined according to what they are not. They’re not members of any traditional religious group.
But what are they?
None Like Us is a new podcast that explores the many identities of those categorized as None Of The Above. In its interviews with Nones, the podcast doesn’t linger on what nones reject, but rather, what they embrace.
Religious groups are dishonest when they assert that people who aren’t affiliated with traditional religious organizations don’t believe in anything. Everybody believes in something, and it’s time we begin to try to understand the positive territories being defined by the Nones, instead of focusing on how they don’t belong.
None Like Us will come online in the summer of 2020.
